The poet Juviral said Rome hopes for bread and circuses. Tiberius Gracchus recognized the advantages of courting the plebians, military generals worked that angle and the soldiers' loyalty was to their military leader not to Rome or the Republic. There was also a man named Julius Ceaser from 100-44 BCE a highly successful general he conquered a huge territory of Gaul. He was very smart because he made the common folk happy and he made friends with some of the more elite upperclassmen like Pompey and Crassus who were very powerful and important men during the time period these three men formed the very first triumvirate. Julis Ceaser crossed the Rubicon which is the point of not return.
