April 30th

Today in class we read and started taking notes on Christianity we learned there was a Jewish man named Jesus 12 men later became the apostles, Diaspora is the dispersal of Jews also many Christians died during this time period because of their beliefs, the pope was the father or head of the church they were very influential one the most important was Saint Augustine he taught that humans needed the grace of God to be saved. Christianity was slowly destroying the Roman Empire and there was also something called an inflation which is a drastic drop in the value of money coupled with a rise in price mercenaries were foreign soldiers who fought for money. Diocletian was a strong-willed army leader who became the new emperor he was a strong-willed army leader. There was also a man named Attila a powerful chief. Finally, during this time period, there was something called Greco Roman culture which was a mixture of Greek Hellenistic and Roman culture.

Today in Western Civilization we took our test on Rome it was an open blog, however, I thought that it was still very hard then we started reading out of the textbook and it mainly focused on the rise of Christianity. It talked about how there actually was a man named Jesus and how later twelve apostles started to follow him these people were called the apostles. It also talked about Jesus death and the impact that it had on the people during this time period, also one of Jesus disciples Paul had an enormous influence on the development of Christianity in the begging Paul was a jew who had never met Jesus but he quickly began to become a follower. We also read about a diaspora which is the dispersal of the Jews, another new vocab word is Constantine which was fighting three rivals for leadership of Rome and a bishop which goes back to Religion which is almost like a priest but supervises more than one church.

Today in Western Civilization we started reviewing for our test some of the questions that will be on the test are who was the first emperor which was Octavin also known as Ceaser Augustus, the tests also focus on Caligula and what happened to him and the answer was he was assassinated we also needed to a lot about the emperors and some of them were good some were bad and some of them were actually crazy. We also learned about how the laws and the governments changed back then they were called the twelve tables and now there the book of laws but they're essentially the same thing. We also learned about what the people back then thought was valuable and what they fought over, Rome destroyed the Carthage and we also learned about the Rubicon which was the point of no return and finally, we learned about the Pax Romana which lasted for two hundred seven years.

Today in Western Civilization we focused a lot on the emperors and we also found out that we are going to have test on Friday. During Pax Romana, the Roman empire expanded further into Africa he set up civil service to run the government empire he started building a network of roads collecting taxes establishing a postal service administering the grain supply and after all of this was over he died of natural causes. After Octavian's death, the power was passed to emporers some were good some weren't and some were crazy. Tiberius ruled from AD 14 to AD37 Caligula ruled from AD 37 to AD 41 and Claudius ruled from AD 41 to AD54. There was also a man named Neuro whos mother killed his brother so he could become ruler he wanted to rebuild Rome and he lost a lot of money and he even raided temples for money most historians don't like him.

April 20th

Today in Western Civilization we learned about Caser he served council for a year appointed himself governor of Gaul Pompey. In 44 BC he was named dictator for life he granted citizenship to people in provinces expanded the Senate created jobs for the poor and increased [pay for the soldiers he was doing many good things an helping out a lot of people. Octavin was named Julis Ceaser's sole heir this is the end of the republic he then took over at the age of 18 which is veryry rare at the time, Octavius the uncuall engaged rulers of Rome he was also given the tit;e imperator. This is where we hey the word emporer ruled for 40 years and Pax Romana was 207 years long 27 BC to 180 AD.

April 20th

The poet Juviral said Rome hopes for bread and circuses. Tiberius Gracchus recognized the advantages of courting the plebians, military generals worked that angle and the soldiers' loyalty was to their military leader not to Rome or the Republic. There was also a man named Julius Ceaser from 100-44 BCE a highly successful general he conquered a huge territory of Gaul. He was very smart because he made the common folk happy and he made friends with some of the more elite upperclassmen like Pompey and Crassus who were very powerful and important men during the time period these three men formed the very first triumvirate. Julis Ceaser crossed the Rubicon which is the point of not return.

Today in Western Civilization we learned that there were 5000 soldiers that were not in it for the pay group of eighty ba century on horseback is the cavalry, armor, and a tunic. The punic war was fought between 264 BC to 146BC it was Rome versus the Carthage and it was like three wars. Two empires were fighting for control naval battles for control of the strategically located island of Sicily Rome wins this battle, the second punic was lead by a twenty-nine-year-old general they attack Rome from the north and not only do they defeat Rome they absolutely destroy them. The people that didn't die were sold into slavery and because of this massive amounts of slaves poured into Italy. The big farms became massive estates that were called latifundia.

April 16th

Today in Western Civilization we learned about Tarquin who seized power like an old school tyrant, his grandfather who was the fifth king died and a daughter killed her husband and sister. The terrible behavior made people never want to be subject to the rule of a king ever again and this attitude lasted for centuries. Consuls were elected officials theirs for one year which is good because if somebody is awful they are only in power for a year. Fifth-century plebeians were 98% of the population, people were refusing to serve in the military laws were written out and posted in public. The SPQR stated that any decree or law passed would be made by the SPQR finally there was a war fought between 264 and 164 BC between Rome and the Carthage.

April 12th

Today in Western Civilization we got a change in class and instead of having our normal class we went to see the genocide program and at the end which in my opinion was the best part we got to hear the son of a survivor talk about his experience and his fathers experience. First, we had some people come from a digital media class and they read some of the names of the people that died during the mass genocide and the reason that genocides are so bad is because it doesn't matter if you are a good person or an evil person if somebody in your family is a certain ethnicity you are going to die for doing absolutely nothing wrong you could be the very best person on the earth but if you are Jewish you will be killed and although it was boring at times by the end I think that everybody learned something.

April 10th

Today in Western Civilization we went over the test that we took before the break next we started reading about Rome which was built on seven rolling hills at a curve on the Tiber River in Italy. Rome was near the midpoint of the Mediterranean Sea. The earliest settler on Rome arrived in prehistoric times, the Latins, Greeks, and Etruscans inhabited Rome from about 1000 BC to 500BC. Between 750 BC and 600 BC, the Greeks established colonies around southern Italy and Sicily, these colonies became prosperous. We also learned about the different forms of governments A republic is where the citizens hold the power and vote, Patricians were the wealthy landowners who held power, Plebians were the people who were under class and although they were not treated as well as everone else there were still laws protecting these people.
